Sport of Cowboy Action Shooting

Cowboy Action Shooting is the fastest growing shooting sport in the world.  Thousands of folks from all over are experiencing the thrill of re-living the Old West and taking on the role of their favorite Cowboy hero.  A mystique surrounds the genre of the Western Cowboy.  This is a chance to play “Cowboys and Indians” once again, as many of us did growing up.

Each shooter chooses an “Alias” by which he or she is then known.  This name can be chosen from real Old West characters, Movie Cowboys, or Fiction.

A very unique aspect of Cowboy Action shooting is costuming.  Each Cowboy’s attire helps develop the persona one wishes to portray.  Each Cowboy is free to choose attire relating to any person, profession, or occupation from the 19th century.  For many, the costuming becomes the prime factor in their enjoyment of the sport.  From Hats, to Scarfs and Vests, to Chaps, to Spurs and Boots, it’s great to play Cowboy.

Leather plays a big part in the sport.  Cowboys in the Old West utilized leather in many forms whether on a Trail Drive or just doing their jobs on the ranch or in town.  Pistol Holsters, Shotgun Belts, Shotgun Slides, Badge holders, Buttstock covers, Rifle cases, Pistol cases, Loading Strips, Loading Bags, and Lever Wraps are just some of the leather items used by each participant in a shooting match.  Quality leather can make the difference in safety and in speed and efficiency on the course.  In many instances, a shooter’s leather identifies him or her as a particular Cowboy and helps build a persona.  A cowboy with a fancy, silver-studded, low-slung holster could be identified as a Gunslinger while another with a conservative leather holster might be more easily identified as a rancher or trail-driver, etc.

Many shooters enjoy the companionship and friendships developed along the way.  For others, it’s the pursuit of competition.  Improvement and becoming a faster, more accurate shooter, or possibly winning a local Match or a World Championship, becomes the driving factor.  Whether you choose to play the game for social aspects, enjoy dressing the part, just like to shoot guns, compete against others, or just trying to re-live an Old West fantasy, Cowboy Action Shooting has something for everyone.  The sport is enjoyed by young and old - male and female.

Cowboy Action Shooting is a multi-faceted shooting sport in which shooters use firearms typical of those used in the Old West.  The guns needed for competition are single action revolvers, pistol-caliber lever action rifles, and old time shotguns such as double barrel or otherwise known as side-by-side shotguns.  Pump Shotguns with exposed hammers designed prior to 1899 are allowed.  Shooters are very proud of their firearms and many go to great lengths to be period accurate, while others are happy to use replicas of the guns that “won the West” and “tamed the land”.

Cowboy Action Shooting is a timed event in which shooters compete for “bragging rights” and “awards” on courses consisting of various shooting Stages.  Most Stages consist of 5 rounds in each of 2 pistols, up to 10 rounds in a rifle, and a shotgun with 4 to 8 rounds on the shooter's body from which he loads as necessary.  Each stage is designed so that every competitor completes the ‘stage’ in the same sequence.  Each stage consists of a unique scenario that features different situations, many of which reconstruct a story-line from history or a movie.  Shooters compete against the Timer clock and each other to determine who is the fastest and most accurate shooter at that event.  Live ammunition is shot at special steel targets for instant feedback for scoring.

Spirit of the Game is a key factor in Cowboy Action Shooing.  It consists of following the rules, being respectful of others, conducting yourself in an exemplary manner, and always playing fair.  Some call this ‘good sportsmanship’, but it is designed to follow examples of Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Hopalong Cassidy, and other famous movie actors that lived their movie parts.

Join the thousands of people already “playing Cowboy” and re-live your childhood with Cowboy Action Shooting.  Dress in cowboy duds, gear up with quality leather, and have a blast.
